One of the things that I have learned about "smooth jazz," is that although many of the records are formulaic and boring, that the live shows are often full of surprises. Research took a new avenue when in 1968 a college student, Dorthy Retallack, started researching the effects of music on plants. He�s also legendary in the San Francisco Bay Area for leading his R&B/Jazz/Pop ensemble Spang-a-Lang. As the story goes, only three people showed up in the audience, so the musicians held a bull session in which the substitute pianist for the gig, Herbie Hancock, demonstrated his new blues tune, "Watermelon Man."
