Francis Bacon, considered the father of science in England, made no actual discoveries (he was a lawyer, essayist, moral philosopher and man of letters) but gave voice to the inductive method of science and, more importantly, to empiricism (pursuit of knowledge by observation and experiment, not by use of reason alone).

Empiricism is the emphasis on observational evidence via sensory experience over other evidence as the source of knowledge. In this paper, I argue that Ockham’s seemingly pessimistic epistemological assessments of what we can know about the human soul and its relation to the body reflect a sound appreciation of what is involved in the theoretical development of philosophy and natural science. His education began at age five at a monastery where his uncle was abbot, and expectations were high that Aquinas would one day fill that position.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe, pagan religions diminished and all but disappeared. Like Spinoza, Mendelssohn (in the first part of the work) advocated the separation of state and church, holding that, while both contribute to human happiness, the state governs man's relation to his fellow man and the church man's relation to God. This point is particularly evident in Deborah Brown's "Agency and Attention in Malebranche's Theory of Cognition," which argues that Malebranche conceives the passion of wonder as critical to correcting cognitive errors.

Kakaie, Qasem, « The Cradle of Wisdom, » transl. by Janis Esots, Ishraq, 5 (2014) : 20-27 [about the Shiraz school of philosophy]. Secular rulers must be subject to the Pope, “for those to whom pertains the care of intermediate ends should be subject to him to whom pertains the care of the ultimate end”. This meant not only that religion influenced all aspects of life, but also, thinking. Caesar was far too popular at that point and had powerful allies in Pompey and Crassus.
