A Roman war galley with infantry on deck; in the Vatican Museums. We could not have a Caledonian canal, but the commissioners must be Englishmen, and meet in London;---a most useful canal they would have made of it, had not the lucky introduction of steam-boats---_Deus ex machina_--- come just in time to redeem them from having made the most expensive and most useless undertaking of the kind ever heard of since Noah floated his ark! For Richard Waverley, he beheld in the growing attachment between the uncle and nephew the means of securing his son's, if not his own, succession to the hereditary estate, which he felt would be rather endangered than promoted by any attempt on his own part towards a closer intimacy with a man of Sir Everard's habits and opinions.

Roger Schonfeld recently posed the question in his excellent analysis of the landscape of electronic monographs: "given that there is no hope for many libraries of recreating the single-site book collection for browsing, are there other steps that can be taken to re-establish opportunities for serendipitous discovery in the emerging environment?" Between 1941 and 1944, Sullivan’s screening methods excluded 12% (almost 2 million) of 15 million men examined, which was about 6 times the rejection rate of World War I. 10 Of all men rejected for medical reasons, 37% were excluded on neuropsychiatric grounds. 11 However, the expected effects of screening did not materialize during World War II: the reported incidence rate for war neurosis in the US armed forces was at least double the rate during World War I.
