According to Buddhist doctrine, what we call the "self" is merely a composite of five "aggregates" or "heaps" (skandhas ). A meaningful, sacred object could be placed in the middle of the circle or in a prominent place. It generally rejects devotional worship and the use of deities such as occurs in Yogic paths. Undergoing any Shingon practice on one's own without empowerment and guidance is extremely frowned upon not only because it is considered a serious offence but also because it can be dangerous to the practitioner if not done properly, as is true in the Tibetan counterpart of Vajrayana Buddhism.
