Although its mathematics is simple and not calculus based this is the way theory was developed (and this is also touched upon in the book by Box, Hunter, and Hunter. Any student who wants to take an entry level calculus course (Math 0120 or Math 0220), Precalculus (Math 0200), or Discrete Math (Math 0400), and who does not have the prerequiste course credit, must take the placement assessment. Ancient works like the Panca-siddhantica (now lost) that had been transmitted through the version by Vrahamihira [ See Part 1 section 3 ] and Aryabhata's Aryabhatiya (499 CE) demonstrated that Indian scholars had their own ways of dealing with astronomical problems and that they had great skill in calculation.[See Note 1 below] Even in the oldest Indian texts, the Chord [to remind yourself about Chords see the section on Claudius Ptolemy in the previous article ] is not used, and instead there appear some very early versions of trigonometric tables using Sines.

Since the statement is a sūtra, it is necessarily compressed and what the ropes produce is not elaborated on, but the context clearly implies the square areas constructed on their lengths, and would have been explained so by the teacher to the student. [23] Baudhayana (c. 8th century BCE) composed the Baudhayana Sulba Sutra, the best-known Sulba Sutra, which contains examples of simple Pythagorean triples, such as: (3, 4, 5), (5, 12, 13), (8, 15, 17), (7, 24, 25), and (12, 35, 37), [27] as well as a statement of the Pythagorean theorem for the sides of a square: "The rope which is stretched across the diagonal of a square produces an area double the size of the original square." [27] It also contains the general statement of the Pythagorean theorem (for the sides of a rectangle): "The rope stretched along the length of the diagonal of a rectangle makes an area which the vertical and horizontal sides make together." [27] Baudhayana gives a formula for the square root of two: [28] which expresses √2 in the sexagesimal system, and which is also accurate up to 5 decimal places (after rounding).
